Task 2 (Typographic Exploration & Communication)

For this task, students will create a 2-page editorial spread (200mm x 200mm per page) that typographically expresses the content from the provided link. Students must choose one of the three given text options. The use of images is not allowed unless explicitly permitted, but minor graphical elements such as lines or shading may be acceptable.

Submission:

1. Eportfolio: All gathered information (failures, successes, epiphanies, sketches, visual research, printouts, websites, images, charts, etc.) must be documented logically and
chronologically in the eportfolio for the duration of the task in one post.

2. Eportfolio: All images/sketches/diagrams/scans must be captured / photographed / scanned well, with good even natural light, without shadows — use of tube/bulb/flash light is not allowed. All images/sketches/diagrams/scans must be labelled (fig 1, 2, etc.), described and dated. Final submission must be indicated clearly (distinguishable from process work) and uploaded as PDF and JPEG &/ GIF (not PNG) or as instructed in class.

Drafts

I accidentally designed some design with the wrong information, and I use it as references to my drafts.

Fig 4. Draft 3

Fig 5. Draft 3 after correction

Below are the drafts in correct information and layout:

Fig 6. Final Draft 1

The curve on top of the title means a connection to the other parts. And there is also a house under all the elements which make it more tidier and neat. The layout of the words is meaning to be like the form of sticky notes.

Fig 7. Final Draft 2

This title play mainly with the size of the words and position of the words. For example, there is a transition of small to big in the word role, which this design saves space for the word of. The layout of the notes is designed similar to the title in the left.

Fig 8. Final Draft 3

The words in this title is designed to be from short to long, This it will be easy to add lines to make it into a house. Lines are also added at the right side to make the roof of the houses.

Testing in Adobe Indesign:

The Final Design

Feedback

Week 7

Specific feedback: Finalize the 4 drafts and show it for feedback

General feedback: Need to work on the drafts, and digitalize it in Adobe Indesign.

Reflections

Experience:

Through this project, I discovered how to change a design by modifying several components such the font, thickness, size, and word arrangement. These modifications gave me the opportunity to investigate how typography alone might affect a design's overall appearance and message. My comprehension of the adaptability of text as a visual element and how minor changes may have a big impact has improved as a result of going through this process. However, I faced obstacles like creativity block and trouble coming up with new ideas to complete the assignment successfully.

Observations:

I discovered during the experiment that even little changes to the typography may significantly change how a design is perceived. I was able to understand how layout and word placement may direct the viewer's eye and communicate hierarchy within the material by experimenting with various layouts. Additionally, I saw that my inability to use Adobe InDesign's capabilities and functionalities caused me to lag significantly. This helped me realize that having a creative vision is equally as vital as knowing the technical parts of design tools.

Findings:

The most critical realization from this exercise was my need to improve my skills in Adobe InDesign. My inability to use the software efficiently hindered my ability to bring my ideas to life, emphasizing the importance of technical expertise in design. Additionally, I found that overcoming creative blocks requires patience and experimentation, as pushing through these moments can lead to unexpected solutions. Overall, this exercise reinforced the idea that design is a balance between creativity and technical ability, and both are essential for success.
