INSTRUCTIONS
Recap Task 2 brief.
2. Write a 300- to 350-word visual analysis of the artwork you selected
from the art gallery. Refer to Visual Analysis lecture notes and
guide to write the visual analysis.
3. Next, using your design principles knowledge, sketch 3 ideas on
how the selected design can be improved. Describe each idea and
support it with a rationale in about 30-50 words. You may include
some visual references (cite the sources) that inspire your own
ideas. Plagiarism in any way (p. 13 of MIB) will result in an F
grade for the overall module and the student will be subjected

Title : Garçon à la pipe (Boy with a Pipe)
Artist : Pablo Ruiz Picasso (24)
Year : 1905
Medium : Oil on canvas
Size : 100 cm × 81.3 cm (39.4 in × 32.0 in)
Observation
This artwork is in potrait, it shows a little boy wearing a flower crown on his head and holding a pipe. The sitting posture of the boy showed a laziness, and he looked like he was deep in thought. His gaze is directed to the lower right, giving the reader a sense of introspection and melancholy. The background of the painting is composed of orange and brown, giving it a warm, earthy feel. This contrasts with the blue (denim) of the boy's clothing and emphasizes the focus point, which is the boy. The flower crown introduces reds, yellows and greens, and the repetition of the flowers making the painting less boring and drawing reader's eye to focus on the boy's face. The boy is positioned slightly off center, making the painting asymmetrical.
Analysis
The soft, warm background tones blend smoothly with the boy's skin and clothing, creating of harmony and unity in Garçon à la Pipe. The floral crown and pipe is analysis as connecting elements that make the composition together. Balance can be seen in the slightly off-center, but still stable position of the boy, which tells people a relaxed and natural stance. Picasso skillfully uses contrast by juxtaposing the warmth of the boy's skin with the background, ensuring the subject stands out. Bright, colorful flowers in the crown makes contrast stands out even more, adding lifely feeling to the piece. Emphasis can be seen on the boy's face and the pipe on his hand, making the viewer's attention to his expression and the object he holds. Lastly, repetition is present in the flowers and pipe, allowing visual consistency and unity.
Interpretation
"Boy with a Pipe" is often interpreted as a reflection on youth, innocence, and the passage of time. Relaxed poses express quiet reflection. The pipe in his hand shows maturity and symbolizes the transition from childhood to adulthood. Vibrant and decorative, the flower crown contrasts with his expression, representing fleeting beauty or the fragility of youth. Picasso used warm tones in the background to create a feeling of comfort and nostalgia, while the contrast between the rich colors of the flowers and the soft surroundings adds depth to the composition. The painting evokes a bittersweet feeling as it captures a moment of stillness and thoughtfulness, allowing the viewer to interpret the emotion and meaning behind the boy's gaze and the symbolic object he is holding.
